“You and me,” Kevin repeated with a slightly reverent tone to his voice as he turned his head to catch the edge of Justin’s lips as the other pulled back. Getting out of the car, Kevin gratefully took hold of his boy’s strong hand and wound their fingers together, idly wondering if Justin could feel his blood rushing like he heard it in his own ears as his nerves and excitement competed for reign over him. He wondered aloud if perhaps they should have used Google to check out what the place looked like and the work they put out before just picking willy nilly from the map. He checked his pocket just to double check for his phone- he’d had the picture of what he wanted saved on the device since he wrote it years ago.
Justin lead Kevin into the dark building, hand in hand through the door where they were met with the strong smell of incense. The building was small with red painted walls adorned with tattoo designs and tattooed people alike. A tattooed woman was sitting behind a display case full of piercings and studs, reading a magazine while chewing on a stick of gum. Justin turned to Kevin and nodded with confirmation and gave his hand a comforting squeeze as they walked up to the woman behind the counter.
“Hello there…me and my boyfriend would like to get some tattoo work done today.” Justin politely spoke to the woman, holding onto Kevin’s hand impossibly tighter. Despite being the rock here, Justin was just as nervous as Kevin but he had to remain strong. For both of them. He took a deep breath while he waited for the woman to respond, chewing on his lip absentmindedly.
Kevin was grateful that Justin, as usual, took the lead. He felt grounded hearing Justin’s sure voice and feeling his strong hand clasped protectively around his own. He glanced around the room, taking in the artwork hung carefully on the walls- feeling his eye widen at the absolutely stunning designs proudly displayed. Any hesitation he felt at just selecting a shop at random without looking into details were assuaged. It was a clean place with a sweet almost oceanic scent wafting from the incense cones strewn about the front desk’s granite top. And the art seemed to be of only the highest quality if the display racks were anything to go by. Idly, he rubbed his thumb across the fleshy part of Justin’s hand between thumb and pointer finger.
“Of course,” the woman behind the desk smiles, the diamond stud pierced through the dimple in her left cheek glinting in the light. “We just had a few cancellations today so you are actually in luck. What are you planning on getting? Location, size, colour, that sort of thing.”
Kevin let Justin explain what he wanted while he flipped through the gallery in his phone looking for the right picture to show the artist.
Justin gave a smile at Kevin for a moment after hearing the woman’s soft words from behind the counter, her tone giving him a bit more assurance than he already had. While Kevin looked through his phone, Justin lightly nudged Kevin’s shirt up to reveal the pale skin of his side and using his hands as gestures to show the tattooed clerk where Kevin had desired his tattoo to be.
The woman nodded in agreement and watched as Justin showed her the exact spot that Kevin had told him of his tattoo to be. “No problem, we can do it there.” She said with another warm smile. “Will you be getting one as well?”
Justin took a moment to make his final decision and seal his fate, giving a slight exhale while he replied. “Yes, just a small one though. Just a heart right here on my left hand.” He pointed to his desired designated spot and looked up at the woman. She nodded in agreement once again and lead them to the back of the store where the tattoo chair was sitting. She excused herself and left Justin and Kevin alone inside the room before Justin turned to Kevin and grabbed both of his hands. “I want you to know…you don’t have to worry about paying for this, and I’ll be here for you every step of the way.” He leaned forward and gave his boyfriend a loving kiss on the cheek with an affectionate squeeze to both of his hands.
Kevin loved how easy the fell into them- just the way Justin was with him never failed to make him feels things that defied explanation. The only other person Kevin knew who would have been able to show the exact location of where he wanted his tattoo while he was honestly just trying to busy himself looking for the picture because his nerves had sneaked up on him was James. By the time they were led into the back he had silently composed himself and pulled up the picture.
He took a deep breath when they were left alone and squeezed Justin’s hands back. “You don’t have to pay,” he said as he leaned forward to return a kiss to Justin’s cheek- closer to the corner of his lips really- on instinct.

“I hope your right. Well, I know you are.” Kevin said seriously, playing with Justin’s fingers as he spoke. “I know I have a habit of letting people too close too quickly, but with you it’s different. Like there’s, I don’t know, more to it than my blind trust in people when it comes to you.” He trailed off as the car pulled into the building’s parking lot. “Okay,” he drawled as he looked at the facade in front of them. “Why do I feel like there should be ominous, intimidating, Scooby Doo type music playing right now?” He rubbed over the knuckle of Justin’s ring finger to calm his sudden nerves that threatened to choke him. No, he could do this. He wanted to do this. “We sure about this?” He turned to Justin, finally tearing his eyes away from the parlor and seeking reassurance.
Justin chuckled at Kevin’s comments to the dark parlor in front of him and met his eyes when the other turned to him a bit frightfully. Justin gave a slight exhale and reached forward to grab both Kevin’s hands in his own in assurance as he spoke. “I want to be with you…for as long as you’ll let me…” He looked away with a shy smile before looking back up at him. “As for the ink…I’m more than sure, love, and I’m pretty positive you are too.” He leant over the console and placed a comforting kiss on Kevin’s cheek. “We’re going to do this together…just like everything else, you and me…”
Justin then reluctantly released Kevin’s hands and got out of the car, circling around to open the door for the blond in the passenger seat. He gave Kevin a reassuring smile and his hand, gesturing for the other boy to grab it and follow him into the shady business. It was now or never.

“You’re turning into me,” Kevin commented idly. “You just rambled. I thought that was my trick.” He leaned over the console and kissed Justin’s cheek fondly. “In all seriousness though, I want the same thing.” He pulled back into his own seat, but kept his attention on Justin’s profile as the other boy dealt with the traffic that would have had Kevin screaming by now. Yup, still just a country mouse, he thought, eyes flicking to the phone momentarily to check how much time was left until they reached their destination- just under three minutes if traffic didn’t get any heavier. “Have you been thinking of this long?” His curiosity, like usual, got the best of him.
Justin smiled at bit at Kevin’s remark, reveling in the affectionate kiss placed on his cheek. He drove for a bit longer until his ears caught wind of Kevin’s question. “I, er, I’ve been thinking about a lot of things like that…ever since we got back from getting tested…and it just opened my eyes to a lot of things, you know? I always thought that, I’m 20. I’m young, I should go out and do whatever, but in reality, I just…really wanna spend my time with you. Even though again, it’s not been very long, I…I have a good feeling about you, and I know we’re gonna last a long time.” He was saying too much! He just needed to be quiet before he spilled practically his kidney to Kevin. He drove up to a black and red building, and put it in park. It looked like this was it. It was a bit of a daunting place, not gonna lie.

Yup, he’s done it again- blown his mind with the unexpected. Kevin took a moment to process Justin’s heavy proposition, replaying it in his head to make sure he actually heard that and hadn’t made it up inside his mind. But, as he processed the words, he found that he didn’t need time to really think about his answer.
“Yes. I, I think I’d…really like that.” He held onto Justin’s hand as tightly as the other boy was grasping his. “You…you’re sure though, sweetheart?” He figured that the other boy wouldn’t say something like that without having given is a lot of thought and really meaning it, but he wouldn’t feel right if he didn’t ask and offer a bit of a warning. “I’ve been told I can get really annoying.” He half joked, honestly too giddy to really think properly. Justin was really trying, he really wanted to be with him…A surge of something washed through Kevin, not able to quite name the emotion but knowing it wasn’t something he’d ever felt before. Gratitude, love, shock, disbelief that somebody like Justin was serious about someone like him, the still alien feeling of being wanted, desired in a way past platonic friendship.
Justin’s eyes and facial features instantly perked up brightly, though not turning to the other boy this time due to increase traffic. “Yeah?” He chuckled at Kevin’s next word, holding Kevin’s hand in his own. “I’ll be able to deal, but I’m sure. More than sure. I mean, I wanna get serious with you even though we haven’t even been together that long…and I figured we have to start somewhere, right? Also, because I love you…and I want to spend every waking second with you in my arms…in a non-creeper, clingy way of course and…I just want to do everything with you and…yup, shutting up now.” There he went, rambling again. This wasn’t like him, what in the blue hell was wrong with him? You’re in love, that’s what. He thought to himself. It seemed like the tattoo parlor wasn’t too far by now, only a few blocks he guessed.

Kevin hummed in response to Justin’s words and glanced down at the hand resting over his, nearly covering it completely. He smiled at the sight, still a little baffled that this was real. But Justin was talking again and he was pulled from his thoughts by the hesitant tone that sounded foreign on the other boy’s tongue for some reason. “Of course you can ask me anything.” He squeezed his thigh reassuringly and waited with patient understanding. He tried to imagine what Justin would want to ask that had him sounding just a touch insecure but he knew better than to try and guess. Like he’d told him, Justin never did what he thought.
“Well…” Justin took a deep breath to compose himself. He didn’t know why he was so nervous about this. It was just a silly question, and the worst Kevin could say was no or that he wasn’t ready quite yet. He nodded to himself and turned to the side to look at Kevin for a moment. “Since we obviously spend so much time together…I was thinking, maybe…did you possibly wanna move in together? I know it’s way soon, but I was just thinking and if you don’t wanna leave your dorm, I could bring all my stuff in and I’m sure management would be okay with it and yeah…” Justin finished his rapid ramble and continued driving down the small boulevard, biting his lip down as he tightly held Kevin’s hand. He took another deep breath and exhale while waiting for Kevin’s answer to his very forward question.

“Ah, alright, that shouldn’t be too bad. It looks like we barely missed rush hour, so I think we’ll be alright.” Justin smiled again at his boy, resting his larger hand over the pale one on his thigh. He heard the blond’s last words and grinned even more if it was possible. If he kept this up, he was going to have a sore jaw for sure by the morning. Keeping his eyes on the road and turning at a green light, he replied with a soft chuckle. “Well…I think life is too short to be predictable, eh love?” He held onto the hand beneath his with a light squeeze, loving the extreme pitter-patter that was going on in his chest. Damn, he’d never felt this happy or this in love in such a short amount of time, since him and Kevin had really only been dating for a bit over a month already, and it baffled him in the most wonderful of ways. He had been pondering a thought in his mind for a couple days along with a few others and he thought about voicing it to Kevin. He didn’t want to move too soon, to fall too fast and scare Kevin away or have it blow up in his face. He gulped as he remained confident of his actions, ushering his paranoid thoughts for now. He had to take chances. “Hey Kev…um, can I ask you something? I mean, if you think it’s too soon, I understand, but I was, uh, just thinking about…something…and well…”

Justin was more than happy with his boyfriend’s reaction to his sudden open attitude and it made him smile almost as widely as the boy sitting in the passenger seat. As he rolled out of the parking lot and into the streets of the chilly Manhattan night, he handed Kevin his smartphone, asking him kindly. “I have a Yellow Pages app on there, could you search for a nearby tattoo parlor so that we know where to go?” He turned away from the road to smile at his boy to add to his soft words. He tapped on his steering wheel, nodded towards the radio as well. “You can turn on the stereo to what you’d like if you want too…” He drove down the street contently, the smile playing on his lips not quite faltering. This day seemed to take a turn for the absolute best and he loved it. He loved everything.
Kevin took the phone and held it in one hand as he flipped through the radio stations, skimming until he found an alternative rock station wasn’t on commercial and setting the volume appropriately. Opening the app with one hand, he let the other rest contentedly on Justin’s thigh, tapping along to the beat as he searched for the nearest parlor in silence. He could get used to this, he found himself thinking, this easy domesticity that they seemed to fall into without even trying. “The closest looks like it’s about…fifteen minutes from here. Shouldn’t be too bad if traffic doesn’t suck.” That was one thing he still hadn’t gotten used to in the city- the obscene time it took to get from one place to another. Back home, if something was fifteen minutes away, it was always fifteen minutes away. Not like here where a ten minute trip could turn into forty. He set the phone on his thigh, turning the GPS on and let the device to the work as he shifted in his seat to watch the other boy. “You know,” he said suddenly. “You never do what I expect you to….I love it.”
“Ah, alright, that shouldn’t be too bad.
